GST Login Guide – How to Login to the Government GST Portal India

The Goods and Services Tax, or GST, as it is more popularly known, was introduced in India in 2017. It is an indirect tax that amalgamates a number of Central and State taxes, such as VAT, service tax, central excise duty, et cetera. The government has launched its official GST website, www.gst.gov.in, also known as the GST Portal, as the mother database for everything related to GST. Through the GST Portal, the processes of GST Registration, updating turnover, filing of returns, applying for refunds, filing of grievances, etc., have been made digital, and a person can now comfortably gain access to all these services from the comfort of their own home instead of travelling to the tax departments in person for the same. To access all these services, one needs to log into their account on the GST Portal first.

The option to “Log in” is available on the top right corner of the homepage of the portal. Upon clicking on “Login”, there are two options available: one for existing users and one for users logging in for the first time. In this blog, we shall get to know the step-by-step process of both types of login.

1.    Login for first-time users

i.    Click on the “Login” option on the top right corner of the homepage.
ii.    After you’ve reached the Login page, click on the word “here” from the instruction “First time login: If you’re logging in for the first time, click here to log in,” which is placed right below the Forgot Username/Password option. The word contains a link that will redirect you to the New User Login Page.
iii.    Once on the New User Login Page, type the Provisional ID/GSTIN/UNI/GSTP ID and the Password that you have received in your email into the respective fields.
iv.    Enter the captcha into the “Type the characters you see in the image below” field, and after these details have been filled in, click on the “Log in” button below.
v.    You will now be on the New Credentials page. Here you will have to enter your desired username and password in the “New Username” and “New Password” fields, respectively. Re-type the password in the “Re-confirm password” field.
vi.    Now click on the “SUBMIT” button below.
vii.    After you have successfully completed all the above steps, a confirmation message will be displayed on the screen stating that the username and password have been successfully created.
viii.    Now go back to the homepage, click on the “Login” option available on the top right corner, and this time enters the username and password you’ve created to log in.
ix.    First-time login users will be prompted to file a non-core amendment application to fill in the bank account details. It is mandatory to submit the bank account details.
x.    Click on “File Amendment”
xi.    You will be directed to the application form for editing, where you can change your bank account information.

2.    Login for existing users

i.    Click on the “Login” option on the top right corner of the homepage.
ii.    After the Login page is displayed, enter your username and password in the respective fields.
iii.    Enter the captcha into the “Type the characters you see in the image below” field, and after these details have been filled in, click on the “Log in” button below.
iv.    Click on the “Dashboard” option present on the left-hand top corner of the page. You will be prompted to the Dashboard page. From your dashboard page, you can access various services such as “File Returns”, “Pay Tax”, etc.

The GST Portal has made the process of filing GST returns and paying the GST much more convenient and less time-consuming for taxpayers. Taxpayers can now breathe a sigh of relief as they no longer have to spend hours at the tax department filing and paying GST. It is essential to login in order to access these services. There is also an FAQ page on the GST Portal along with other guides to aid you in your process of working through the portal.
